The dominant buck freshens his scrape as the rising sun vaporizes the frost on an autumn meadow. My neighbor's meadow lined with hickory, sycamore, and walnut trees provided this inspiration as I discovered a line of scrapes there. This buck is similar to one that haunts my dreams.

Twenty plus years ago I hunted this ridge with a hemlock covered rocky edge surrounded by a laurel thicket. My memory of it brought to mind the sensations of meeting a large bruin emerging from its dark haunts.
